A MAN is fighting for his life after he was hit by a car in Ryedale.

The accident happened at 5.45pm yesterday as the 36-year-old man crossed the A170 at Thornton le Dale. He was hit by a gold-coloured Peugeot 206, driven by an 18-year-old man from Pickering, which was heading in the direction of Pickering from Scarborough.

The injured man, who lives locally, was taken to Scarborough Hospital with serious head, chest and ankle injuries. His condition is described as critical but stable.

Local diversions were put in place while the police examined the collision scene. The road reopened at 9pm.
