DYNAMIC rowing duo Rebecca Turley and Iona Harrap have parted company on the crest of a wave.

The teenage York City Rowing Club double act were awarded the Whitmore Trophy as the best juniors for 2008/9 season at the rowing club’s annual dinner.

The pair sculled successfully in events all over the country, with numerous victories including Loughborough Regatta, Durham Regatta, Newark Head race, and Bradford Regatta.

They were also third in the Junior Inter-regional Regatta in Nottingham, fourth in the National Sculling Championships in Nottingham, and reached the semi-finals of National Schools Sculling Championships.

However, their partnership has come to an end as Harrap has moved to St Peter’s School to study for A-levels, and will now represent the school in competitions.

Archbishop Holgate’s School pupil Turley, who lives in York, is 16, while Harrap is a year older than her former rowing partner.

Turley’s mother, Chris, said: “Rebecca has raced above her age group for many years and this award was the icing on the cake after such a successful year.

“They both will probably go onto many wins separately, but it’s an end to a very successful era.”

Meanwhile, Turley’s run of success has continued as she was part of a York City Rowing Club quad that won at a recent Newark Head event.

Chris added: “Her crew were the fastest women’s boat on the river. That’s quite an achievement when you’re racing against seniors.”
