IN response to Royal Marine Matthew James Sowerby’s sentence being cut (Released soldier could go to war, The Press, March 17).

Apparently the Ministry of Defence does not comment on appeal court decisions or reveal details of military discipline matters (as quoted).

But it does offer comments in defence for one of its children.

I say children because throwing a glass and causing injury to the young woman concerned does not constitute the actions of a grown man employed as a soldier, and I wonder if he had been employed say as a street cleaner would the decision to reduce his sentence been the same. I don’t think so.
