RAIL enthusiasts and well-wishers greeted two steam trains into York as they carried passengers on a fundraising event for British troops.

After arriving at York Station on Saturday from Lincoln, the 500 travellers made their way to the National Railway Museum for a day of activities in aid of the Help For Heroes charity.

The excursion was hauled by Gauge O’Guild and the 70013 Oliver Cromwell, which is owned by the National Railway Museum and had been renamed 70048 The Territorial Army for the day.

Both locomotives were donated free of charge and railway companies waived their normal fees for track access and station charges – meaning all money raised went straight to Help For Heroes.

Another a big draw for rail fans at the weekend was the sight of a steam train taking the first passengers over a new bridge on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway between Grosmont and Goathland on Saturday.
