POLICE have issued a fresh warning to York householders to be on their guard against “two-in-one” burglars.

Detectives say thieves have been sneaking into people’s homes to steal ignition keys before escaping in cars parked outside the properties.

North Yorkshire Police wants to remind homeowners of security measures to protect their homes against what they have labelled “Hanoi burglaries” following the latest incident in York earlier this week.

Thieves broke into a property in Penyghent Avenue between 11pm on Sunday and 2am on Monday.

A force spokesman said the offenders gained entry to the house via an insecure door and stole keys to a black Kia Rio. The thieves then took the car.

Police want to stress the importance of ensuring all doors and windows are locked and keys are kept well out of sight.

A spokesman said: “About one in three burglaries is committed by an opportunist thief. “Homeowners can help to prevent themselves becoming victims of crime by taking a few simple steps to stop thieves gaining access to their property.

“These include ensuring strong locks are fitted and used, keeping keys out of sight and fitting security lighting.

“You should always know where your keys are and make sure they are with you or in a place that will not be seen from outside.

“It’s obvious that people are breaking into houses with the specific reason of stealing car keys, and it’s your responsibility to make sure of the security of your keys.

“You can find more information on the North Yorkshire Police website at www.northyorkshire.police.uk.” Any witnesses to the Penyghent Avenue incident or anyone who knows the whereabouts to the stolen vehicle are asked to phone North Yorkshire Police on 0845 60 60 247, quoting reference number 12100048100.
