A FLURRY of fundraising events has catapulted the total amount raised for the favourite good causes of the Lord Mayor of York over the £50,000 mark.

Coun John Galvin’s fundraising committee pulled out all the stops last month, holding seven events in only four weeks.

Models walked the catwalk in a charity fashion show, raising more than £1,700, and Gurkhas based at Imphal Barracks in York cooked up a Nepalese feast to boost the coffers by £3,000.

Meanwhile, a flower-arranging demonstration raised £500, a bag-pack at Sainsbury’s in Foss Bank raised £400, a ceilidh brought in £500 and a benefit gig raised another £500.

York Philharmonic Choir performed a concert and historian Peter Stanhope held a series of talks about a painting that gives a birds’ eye view of 15th century York.

With just under two months before his term as Lord Mayor comes to an end on May 27, Coun Galvin is spearheading one last fundraising drive.

All money raised will go to his chosen charities – York Against Cancer and Brunswick Organic Nursery and Craft Workshop, in Bishopthorpe, which is a workplace for adults with learning difficulties.

He said: “I am absolutely thrilled with how much we’ve raised so far and I hope the people of York will rally round for one last fundraising effort.”

Golfers are being challenged to tee off in aid of the Lord Mayor of York’s charities on April 30.

Entry to the golf day at Pike Hills Golf Club, near Copmanthorpe, costs £15 per player, and entry forms are available from Geoff Taylor on 01904 786650.

Meanwhile, the Archbishop of York has agreed to throw open Bishopthorpe Palace for a fundraising event on May 5.

Guests will be treated to a drinks reception, a tour of the palace and a buffet. Only a few tickets remain. They cost £30 and are available from the civic office at York’s Guildhall.
