Yorkshire’s Atherley Trophy final team was announced with sadness last week following the sudden death of their president Maureen Ryan.

She was one of the founder members of Harrogate indoor bowls and had been part of their working group for ten years prior to the 1996 opening.

As a continual active member, Ryan was appointed the club captain in 2005 and held the post up to her death.

In 2008, she was appointed as the Yorkshire vice-president, taking the presidency in April 2009. She was very proud and honoured that the Yorkshire team reached the final of the country’s prestigious team competition at Nottingham IBC on April 17 where they will play Kent.

The team will mark their appreciation of Ryan by holding a minute’s silence prior to the game during which they will wear black armbands.

The team will be: Carol Instone (York), Melanie Brooke (York), Betty Richardson (York) and Lauren Copeland (Thornaby); Joan Mason (Thornaby), Sue Kirkpatrick (York), Helen Wood (York) and Joyce Chelin (York); Linda Harrison (York), Sue Tomlinson (York), Molly Thompson (Doncaster) and Joan Jackson (York); Carole McLean (Scarborough), Jane Simpson (Selby), Freda Whorton (Redcar) and Eva Dayes (North Cave); Sue Allen (Ryedale), Lynne Metcalfe (Ryedale), Sheila Turpin (York) and Margaret Roberts (Ryedale); Helen Walker (York), Nora Pitchforth (South Leeds), Linda Wiles (North Cave) and Zoe Eagles (York).

The reserves are Judith Hill (Ryedale), Rita Hodgkinson (Doncaster), Maureen Walker (York) and Jenny Wright (Harrogate).

A coach has been organised for spectators, leaving Thanet Road at 10am, priced at £5 per person.

Anyone wanting to go should either book with a team member or phone York IBC on 01904 704180.
