York Indoor Bowls Club took sweet revenge on Featherstone after they won the Yorkshire League Challenge Cup following their disappointment in not winning the league.

Played at New Earswick IBC, the event pitched first division winners Featherstone against second division champions Redcar and league runners-up York against third-placed Thornaby.

As expected Featherstone coasted through their semi-final, while York were comfortable 102-65 victors despite it being a tougher task on paper.

Paul Humphries’ team got off to a good start leading 11-1 after five ends and kept the momentum going, only losing four ends in their 40-4 victory.

David Stroughair’s rink also made the most of leading 12-0 after five ends to win 30-10.

Paul Mooring’s team dropped seven shots over the first three ends but by the 11th they led 16-8 en route to winning 25-19.

Phil Emmerson’s side found the going tough and lost to Paul Mosley’s team 32-7.

York went into the final confident having already beaten Featherstone twice this season.

As in the previous games the early aggregate tallies were tight with the score standing at 17-16 in York’s favour after five ends. After 15 ends, the gap was widened to 58-47.

Crucially they held on before finally wrapping up an 80-59 triumph.

Emmerson’s rink didn’t let their semi-final defeat upset them. They took an 8-0 lead after only five ends and stayed ahead to seal a 20-12 win.

Humphries’ rink carried on their emphatic form against Tony Horobin’s side with a brace of twos and a five rocking their opponents to lead 14-10 after 13 ends. They then won all the remaining ends bar one to triumph 24-11.

Stroughair’s team rallied well from 14-6 down after 13 ends to level at 15-15 with four to play.

They won them all to clinch a superb 23-15 victory.

Paul Mooring’s team led 9-7 at the halfway stage before dropping ten shots en route to a 20-13 reverse.

But that failed to deny York bagging a second successive Challenge Cup conquest.
