ON Saturday I switched off the daily TV rant of David Cameron and had a quiet walk to the University of York to see the latest concert by York Symphony Orchestra.

The concert opened with Walton’s Prelude and Fugue “The Spitfire”, which the composer wrote for the 1942 film The First Of The Few.

This was followed by Mendelssohn’s lovely violin concerto in e-minor, played with great confidence by Royal Northern College of Music student Dorin Tuca. That was a lot more confidence than I managed in 1989 when the school’s orchestra played it at the university’s Central Hall, where I had to fill in the backing on a chord organ, to avoid the cost of moving the grand piano from one hall to another.

After an interval drink, York Symphony Orchestra ended Saturday’s concert with a symphony by Martucci.

The brass section returned for this, but there was also some lovely part writing for the strings.
