YOUNGSTERS from across the region took a series of fascinating steps down the path to scientific understanding with the University of York’s Science Trail.

Nearly 270 teenagers, aged between 14 and 16, from 14 schools across the Yorkshire and Humber region, took part in a range of hands-on activities designed to open young minds to the wonders of science and medicine.

Activities included discovering how to use paint to stop chocolate melting, creating characters in a virtual world and trying out some novel ways to test blood pressure.

There was also the opportunity to see how plant breeding is helping to cure malaria, analyse samples taken from a “crime” scene and locate the source of 3D sound.

The 2010 University of York Science Trail was the most ambitious since its establishment five years ago. Schools from York, Tadcaster, Whitby, Knaresborough, Leeds, Bradford, Sheffield, Rotherham, Dewsbury, Keighley and Scunthorpe took part in the Science Trail, on Monday.
