The Evening Press's recent exploration of the siting of Norwich Union call centres in India may have raised some concerns but understanding too.
I have worked in sales for American companies operating in this country, creating many jobs in different parts of Britain and making substantial contributions to our economy. Campbells Soup Kitchens in Kings Lynn, Playtex corsetry in Greenoch, Pitney Bowes mailroom and franking equipment in Harlow, RR Donnelley print in York, all with large factories producing for home and overseas markets.
In the 60s, 70s and 80s, their training, support and motivation was superior to that available in many British companies. But, because of the competition they brought to our markets they were, to a sizeable extent, responsible for the improved performance of our home grown companies, now competing with the best world wide.
Free trade benefits all but, as old stagers, we have to keep our education system free from clutter and restricted thinking so that new ideas and products can emerge in a steady stream fuelled by science and high tech.
But, I must say, I do avoid 0900 phone numbers most of which I have found too expensive, time wasting, often unhelpful and sited abroad. They will improve with time I'm sure, but in the meantime I'll leave it to others, along with buying on the internet.
I believe in equal opportunities for all including for our state pensions to purchase equal value in our ever improving lifestyles.
