READING your article ‘Police ban toast (The Press, March 26), is it all getting too hot to handle?

In the same edition, it is revealed that a chief constable and deputy chief constable are facing allegations of nepotism (Police chiefs face probe).

After the banking and MPs’ expenses scandals, now our top-ranking police are under scrutiny. What is happening to this one proud England?

Perhaps ex-PC K Bowker would care to comment, or maybe it’s too controversial. He might get his fingers burned.

• Recent revelations that West Yorkshire Police have banned toasters in the Holbeck division because of a fire breaking out (The Press, March 26) leave much to the imagination.

Without making too light of the subject, and in the knowledge that there could have been serious consequences, this reminds me of the days when I owned a static caravan on a holiday campsite, and one of the rules consisted of a yearly inspection of all electrical equipment, accompanied by a certificate of approval. So are we to assume that scenario applies to all public buildings, including police premises?

While King Alfred burned the cakes, the police squad in question may have been in hot pursuit of a criminal gang at the time, as portrayed in the police series Ashes to Ashes.
