The Bank Holiday weekend has provided the first real test for the recent multi-million pound project to ease traffic congestion at the Hopgrove Roundabout.
By lunch-time, reports from the Highways Agency showed motorists approaching the roundabout on the eastbound carriageway of the A64 were facing delays of more than 30 minutes.
Along the entire stretch of the A64 between Copmanthorpe to the south west of York and Flaxton to the north east of York, vehicles were lucky to reach speeds of more than 20 miles per hour.
