REPLYING to my letter of May 23 (Case For Nuclear), Mr B Emmerson chose to mention subsidies for nuclear power (Nuclear subsidies, readers' letters, May 25).
It is right to say that I did not raise this in my letter but, in the unlikely event of the decommissioning of the nuclear industry at the cost of £70 billion, probably more, several other alternative energy providers will be needed to supply the 20/25 per cent provided at the moment by nuclear industry.
Wind, wave, solar power and geothermal (ground source heating) etcetera would all need huge subsidies, as they do now, and however much of the energy they generate, it will be unlikely to be anywhere near 20 per cent.
The question of waste, which Mr Emmerson also raises, I dealt with in my previous letter.
