I would like to thank Mr Shepheard for his letter (Restorative Event, May 27).

This has given much encouragement to those at the Central Methodist Church, in York, who have been working very hard organising organ recitals for several years.

In addition to an established series of lunch-time recitals, a series of evening recitals has started more recently.

I thought that I should inform readers that tomorrow's organ recital, at 12.30pm, will now be given by Philip Tordoff, of Halifax Parish Church. It is hoped to arrange a new date later in the series for Dr Francis Jackson's recital and I will inform readers of this.

Mr Tordoff is a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists and was organ scholar at Downing College, Cambridge. He has given many recitals in Halifax and elsewhere.

We look forward very much to his third recital at the Central Methodist Church, which promises to be a most enjoyable occasion.

The fine organ at Central Methodist was installed by John Brown of York in 1841. Mr Brown had previously worked for the York organ-builder Elliot and Hill, who built the new organ for the Minster in the 1830s following the fire started by Jonathan Martin.

A comprehensive restoration of the Central Methodist organ was completed in the 1990s by the York organ-builder Geoffrey Coffin, who also tunes and maintains the organ. The instrument has three manuals, 49 stops and nearly 2,500 pipes, making it one of the largest organs in York after the organ in the Minster.

I look forward to welcoming readers to future recitals.

Philip Paul, Director of Music, Central Methodist Church, Greencliffe Drive, Clifton, York.
