THE announcement that the Land Registry is to close its York office (The Press, May 25) over the next ten years ignores the fact that many staff are already looking to their futures and moving elsewhere, rather than staying on a sinking ship.
Many staff have family responsibilities and for them moving is not an option.
There are no other Land Registry offices within easy daily travelling distance so for these staff the future is bleak.
With key postholders fast approaching retirement, and the extension of new technology and working practices, the likelihood is that there will be no Land Registry presence in York in three to four years, never mind ten years.
That's bad news not only for the staff and their families, but also for the York economy which will no longer benefit from the spending power of the 136 employees affected.
