CLIFTON Cycling Club rider Kit Gilham scored his first road race win in the Arthur Metcalf Memorial race near Richmond.

The gruelling 45-mile race covered four laps and Gilham broke clear with former national road race champion Dave Cook (Alpine Rootz) at the end of the second lap. The pair stayed clear of the main field to sprint it out for the win.

Gilham also took three of four Primes' at the top of Waitwith Bank to claim the King of the Mountains prize.

It was the first running of Richmond and Darlington Cycling Club's flagship road race in ten years.

Fifteen-year-old Clifton rider Matt Shipley, from Fangfoss, is building on his impressive ride in the Northern Area circuit championships with another good road race result, this time in a circuit series at Odsal, Bradford.

Shipley was one of 16 riders contesting the 25-kilometre race, and with speeds topping 32 mph, the Clifton rider impressed with his aggressive riding as he tried to break away from the bunch. In the end, it came down to a fast uphill sprint for the line, with Shipley taking fourth place.

Erik Van Lakerveld won the second Clifton Thursday Evening Time-trial League fixture at Sheriff Hutton in 26 minutes 22 seconds.

Eighteen riders contested the tough 11-mile course, which included the climb up Bulmer Bank. Charlie Evans (Clifton) was second in 27.29 and Kit Gilham third (27.48).

Fastest junior rider was Knaresborough RT's Luke Barber with 28.43 which gave him fourth place overall.

Matt Shipley's 30.27 made him the fastest juvenile with Nigel Goscinski (Obri Coaching) the best Veteran 40+ in 28.49 and fifth overall.

Other times were: Paul Musgrave (Clifton) 29.22, S Savage (Clifton) 29.23, M Coward 30.35, Pete Skelton (Clifton) 31:30 (best veteran +50), J Wagstaff (Clifton) 31.35, B Liddle (Clifton) 31:37, M Antrobus (Clifton) 33.37, I Hagyard 34.03, Arnie Pearson (Clifton) was fastest Veteran 60+ with 34.32, I Millns (Clifton) 35.38 and A Smith 36.53.
