THE CIU Saturday League takes centre-stage tomorrow with competitors on Marley Lake at the Laybourne complex hoping for a repeat of last Sunday's Amalgamation Committee match when the field averaged nearly 15lb each.

BRS enjoyed some good action on Brown's Lake at the same venue where Gary Rogerson won with a nice mixed net of roach, rudd, tench and crucians of 14lb 11oz.

Waggler and maggot took most of the fish, a method that proved successful for the rest of the leading weights including Paul Oxberry and John Chambers, who included a nice 3lb tench in his third placed bag.

Poppleton Ponds is in brilliant form with many ton-up hauls being taken by mid-week pleasure anglers. Bream are ravenous with lots of fish falling to worm or pellet fished in the deeper water.

Paradise Lakes, Storwood, also report lots of action. Pole and maggot fished to hand in the margins will ensure a bite a chuck from a variety of smaller species whilst bread fished on the surface is taking carp well into double figures.

The carp are also patrolling the surface layers at Carpvale where catches of 20 or more fish in a sitting have been relatively commonplace this week.

Plenty of feed in the form of dog biscuits or floating pellets is required to whip the fish into a feeding frenzy which, once achieved, should make them fairly easy to catch.

On the rivers the Ouse continues to fish well with small fish feeding both up and downstream of York. Plenty of skimmers and small chub were featuring in catches last weekend at Beningbrough Park, which bodes well for the river's future prospects.

I understand that anglers at this venue are having bother with boaters who seem to be under the misapprehension that the sand bed opposite the Nidd mouth is available for mooring. This is not the case and any boats observed doing so should be reported to the National Trust who own the land.

Further down the river skimmers are also feeding well at Fulford. The river seems to be hanging onto it's colour well following the thunderstorms a few weeks ago and the fishing has benefited as a result.
