CLOSE your doors to crime - that's the message from York Police as the city basks in a heatwave.
Sneak thieves struck at 48 homes last month, according to new figures, using unlocked door and windows for easy access.
Senior officers have warned residents looking to cool their homes they could be leaving their properties wide open to intruders.
Safer York Partnership boss Jane Mowat said: "These are spur of the moment burglaries which occur simply because an opportunity has presented itself."
Her comments came as officers released this CCTV image of a man they would like to speak to in connection with a sneak theft at a guest house in Millfield Road, South Bank.
A personal CD player, silver lockable vanity case containing hair products, silver bracelet and videos were taken from a room on July 2, at around 11.20pm.
Elsewhere, property was stolen from a house in Rowan Avenue, New Earswick, between 10pm on July 5 and 7am on July 6. Entry was gained through the kitchen window.
On July 5, between 8pm and 8,30pm, thieves stole front door keys from a house in Bromley Street.
A laptop computer was stolen from a house in Thief Lane, between 1am and 8am, on July 7, after burglars entered through a living room window
Inspector Colin Moreton pleaded for residents to toughen up their security.
He said: "Despite repeated warnings about locking up, residents are giving the burglar a very easy time.
"These unfortunate victims have effectively invited the burglar in and, without exception, are embarrassed after the event.
"Forty-eight incidents in one month is 48 too many. We really must drive the messages home until they become second nature."
Hot spot areas for sneak thieves include Fishergate, Heslington and the Tang Hall end of Hull Road, where residents are advised to be extra vigilant.
If you have information about any of the burglaries phone the police witness line on 0845 6060 247.
