Playford Ros, the North Yorkshire wine merchant, is expanding to bring the produce of exclusive New World vineyards to Britain.
The Thirsk-based company is launching a division called Prestige Agencies. It will source wines from smaller, high quality producers who are ignored by the larger importers.
These will be offered to other distributors, as well as to key retailers and small hotel and restaurant chains across the country.
Andrew Firth, managing director of Playford Ros, said: "We have traditionally been a regional wholesaler, supplying quality hotels and private customers in the north east of England, as well as having a contract to supply York-based rail operator GNER with all its wines.
"But we are branching out. Prestige Agencies-Playford Ros will be concentrating almost exclusively on New World top quality wine-producing estates. We are proposing to have a small network of regional wholesalers active on a partnership basis only, with two to three prestigious retailers such as Harvey Nichols."
