THE new Archbishop of York will be formally enthroned at a special service in York Minster on November 30.
Dr John Sentamu, currently the Bishop of Birmingham, was chosen to succeed Dr David Hope last month and becomes Britain's first black Archbishop.
In keeping with tradition, on July 21, York Minster's College of Canons will be summoned by the Crown to choose Dr Sentamu by election as Archbishop. The appointment will be confirmed by the Archbishop of Canterbury at a private ceremony on October 5.
In an interview with the Evening Press, Dr Sentamu said he planned to welcome all walks of life at Bishopthorpe Palace and would move the church forward by encouraging more young people into the faith.
Attendance at the enthronement service at York Minster is by invitation, or by ticket, with a limited number available to members of the public.
Applications should be sent to the following address and will be placed on a waiting list: The Dean & Chapter of York, Precentor's Secretary (Enthronement), Church House, Ogleforth, York YO1 7JN.
The Dean of York, the Very Reverend Keith Jones, said: "York Minster is where Dr John Sentamu will in the coming years exercise his ministry of leadership, inspiration and teaching. Holding the ancient title of Primate of England, his influence will extend far beyond the Diocese of York, and even the Northern Province, and we look forward eagerly to welcoming him among us, and working with him in the years to come."
