NORTH Yorkshire golf ace Simon Dyson will have to have his 'A'-game out to conquer the K Club and retain an interest in the Smurfit European Open through the weekend.
The 27-year-old Malton and Norton GC star, now based in York, found no luck of the Irish in the opening round in which he suffered a wretched start in County Kildare.
Opening his first round at the tenth hole, Dyson immediately dropped a shot, a feat he repeated on four of the next six holes. That left him five over and though he replied with his first birdie on the 18th and then another on the par-five fourth, Dyson carded further bogeys on holes two, three and six to finish six over.
South Africa's Trevor Immelman leads after a six-under 66 put him one shot clear of reigning champion and compatriot Retief Goosen and Francois Delamontagne of France.
Meanwhile, Harrogate GC's John Parry and another chip off the Malton and Norton GC block - teenager Stuart Parkin - dazzled in the Yorkshire Amateur Championship at Ganton.
Parry beat his first round opponent 6 and 4 and then pounded Sickleholme's S Needham 7 and 5 to go into today's quarter-finals.
Parkin, and fellow York Union team-mate Martin Brown (Pike Hills) qualified for the matchplay stages after shooting respective scores of 156 (84 72) and 154 (77 77).
Brown's interest ended in the first round, where he lost 4 and 3 to G Evans (Northcliffe).
Parkin, however, beat M Buckley (Ilkley) by one hole before losing 4 and 2 to S Hartley (Howley Hall) in round two.
