THE access from Woodthorpe on to the A1237 York outer ring road is a horrendously dangerous junction as demonstrated by the recent fatalities ('Ring road horror', June 29).

As we all know, traffic thunders down the A1237 from the Clifton Moor area towards the A64 at speeds probably exceeding 60 mph, and it thunders up towards Clifton Moor from the A64 at similar speeds.

The traffic at peak times is also very heavy and consistent.

I live on Old Moor Lane and occasionally drive out to the junction to turn right towards Clifton Moor.

At peak times this can be a real death-defying maneovre because of the volume and speed of traffic.

One morning at 9am, an unfortunate driver wanted to turn right at that junction but, because of the volume and speed of the traffic, had to spend more than ten minutes looking left and right to try and find a safe opportunity.

This obviously created frustration, and even more frustration in the drivers lined up behind wishing to turn right.

I could see this, and the volume of traffic, and realised how dangerous it was to turn right. So I turned left towards the A64 and the roundabout over it, to come back up the A1237 towards Clifton Moor. This added maybe five minutes to my journey, which is not unacceptable.

I would therefore suggest that very quickly, before someone else gets killed, the council instigates a temporary "no right turn" order at that junction thereby forcing the traffic coming out of the Woodthorpe junction to turn left down towards the roundabout at the A64.

This will obviously make the junction much safer while the council investigates a longer term solution to the problem.
