REGARDING Mr and Mrs Wartho's letter about the Barbican redevelopment (June 23), the list of things being taken away is even longer.

Along with all the facilities they mention - and two swimming pools and a diving pool, gym and bowling green - we are losing a creche, buggy/wheelchair-friendly cafeteria and a concert hall.

Environmentally, however, we are losing even more. The Barbican and coach park sites provide a much- needed "lung" for this congested and polluted area.

The Barbican car park is possibly the only landscaped car park in York and the trees, fully grown flowering hedgerow and bowling green provide a small oasis.

We are also losing the views of the city walls and St Lawrence's Church from Kent Street plus the attractive approach from Foss Islands Road with the view of the pyramid of the swimming pool fronted by the bowling green and hedgerow against the backdrop of the city walls.

Socially, we are losing a community facility within walking distance of many homes.

P M Blanchard,

Heslington Road, York.
