THANK you for the recent coverage about the car park in Acomb that Morrisons has recently acquired and arrogantly placed restrictions upon.
As a local "elephant" with a very long memory, I recall the time when Presto/Safeway had their store in the centre of Front Street and discussions were taking place about the piece of land that the current store is now on.
Sainsbury's had wanted to build a store in the locality but the council put the proviso that the car park was to feed all Acomb facilities.
The council was trying hard to reduce the parking problems incurred in the surrounding streets.
Sainsbury's backed off because they wanted an exclusive car park and we were led to believe Safeway got their planning permission by promising to comply with providing the current car park.
Signs indicating that there is a public car park at the Morrisons site are still up locally.
Let's hope the council, Morrisons and residents resolve this fiasco soon, because people's frustration at not able to park near their homes, and local businesses not being able to trade, could lead to a further decline in the community.
