City of York Council's Bill Woolley, Peter Evely and the rest of their team are to be congratulated on their consultation, planning and implementation of the traffic plan for Royal Ascot at York.
The traffic jams encountered on the first day at the Railway Station were a problem, but what was so impressive was, when the leader of the council was made aware of it, he went to the station and, with his help and the co-operation of GNER, First York and taxi drivers, the rest of the week passed without any major traffic problems.
In addition, the council's licensing officers became involved and solved the early ranking problems at the racecourse.
I feel confident that, with a few minor alterations, we have a blueprint for future big race meetings on Knavesmire.
But before the resumption of normal hostilities, it is only fair to thank all those concerned who contributed to a unique event.
Secretary, Station Taxis,
The Portico,
