WITH the promise of summer at last in the air, there are few things better than a quiet drive into the country, followed by a leisurely walk and a good meal in a local pub or caf.
We all have our favourites. But it is always good to try out new walks, so Countryside Books' new Drive and Stroll guide to North Yorkshire could be just the thing.
True, author Ron Freethy lives the wrong side of the county border in Clitheroe, Lancashire.
He seems to know his North Yorkshire, however. The guide includes 20 short circular walks ranging from 1 to seven miles and featuring some of the region's most beautiful countryside.
There are some old favourites here - Malham, Bolton Abbey and Kettlewell - but also a few less well-known routes closer to home, including walks around Marston Moor, Byland Abbey, Nun Monkton and Hutton-le-Hole. Best of all, there are some great suggestions for that all-important meal and pint, too. Plenty to keep the afternoon walker happy this summer.
