I WAS privileged to be invited to visit HMS York along with other members of York Royal Navy Association.
The trip was a great success and the hosts were first class. We were wined and dined in true Royal Navy fashion. The day at sea brought back many happy memories for all of us.
The day took a downturn with the appearance of the Lord Mayor. Her dress code was appalling for someone in high office representing the city of York.
I appreciate that wearing full regalia would have been inappropriate for onboard conditions but to turn up looking like a peace protester from Greenham Common was an insult to the ship's company and the city of York.
I know the RNA branch members share my thoughts and feelings.
Should more council representatives visit HMS York I hope they treat it with respect. The vessel does sterling work for the community and deserves recognition for this.
