YORK Cricket Club surrendered the lead of the Yorkshire ECB Premier League when they failed by two runs to overtake the Yorkshire Academy total of 241-7 at Clifton park yesterday.
Arch rivals Harrogate enjoyed a high scoring victory at Sheffield Collegiate and now head the table by a single point.
It was a disappointing result for York but they had several chances to clinch the match but failed to put them away.
The Academy chose to bat first and their innings was dominated by a century from veteran Yorkshire player and second team captain Richard Blakey who was dropped early on.
He batted throughout the 55 overs for an undefeated 117 including 16 boundaries of which two were clearances.
Adam Lyth, from Whitby, impressed until he was smartly stumped by John McGrady off Rob Flack. Dan Broadbent, with four wickets, had York's best figures.
In reply, York lost three wickets early and at 45-4 seemed to have no chance of victory. However, Simon Mason and Marcus Wood put together 96 runs for the fifth wicket before Wood fell to paceman Steve Patterson who held the Academy attack together. Flack joined Mason in a 90-run partnership as Mason secured a fine century including 15 fours.
With two overs to score 12 runs, Flack was caught off a high full toss and Mason run out on an overthrow. Nick Thornicroft hit out but an excellent yorker from Patterson prevented him making a winning strike off the last ball.
