A NEW landlord and landlady have taken over a York pub - with ambitious plans to restore it to its former glory - after the previous owners went into voluntary liquidation.

Robin Watson and his fiance, Susan Meek, are refurbishing The Shoulder Of Mutton, in Heworth Green, inside and out, and intend running charity nights and hosting bands, discos and karaoke evenings.

They also intend to open a steakhouse and install a pergola, flower beds and lighting in the garden.

Susan says she will also install a swear box on the bar, with all proceeds going to the Special Care Baby Unit at York Hospital.

The couple have taken over the lease from Peragam (UK) Ltd, which is now in voluntary liquidation.

At an extraordinary general meeting of members of the company, held at the offices of David Horner and Co in Clifton Moor, York, it was proved that Peragam, formed in 1999, could not continue in business. David Horner was appointed liquidator by members and creditors. Peragam director Ian Naismith was not available for comment.

Mr Watson said that he and Susan, who has previous experience of running pubs such as the former Falcon in Micklegate, York, took over the lease several weeks ago.

He said they were now carrying out an extensive refurbishment, including replacing seating and carpets and redecorating the bar.

Susan said a gardener had been employed to help make the garden nice enough for the pub to become a potential venue for weddings, with new lighting, a pergola and flower beds.

She said they planned to organise discos and karaoke evenings. "We went to have bands in as well," she said.

The couple are planning an official opening on July 15, when they hope a duo, Hope And Pray, will be performing, and when they hope the pub's loyal regulars, as well as new customers, will come along.
