WE write in response to your coverage of the roadside demonstration in Fulford (May 20).
As Fulford residents we know about the traffic, and the growing problem it poses.
However, on demo morning we were surprised at how busy it was at 8am (we know City of York Council has conducted traffic census at off-peak times and in school holidays). Matters can only get worse if the creation of a new road and junction to serve the Germany Beck developments of up to 700 homes (how many cars?) in addition to the existing 300 homes off Fordlands Road is allowed.
We accept York was built up long before the age of cars but hope the A1237 ring road will one day serve its purpose - it has available space.
At Fulford there is neither the space for a new road, nor the "room" on the A19 for adding to its over-use.
Making room for a second access road to the Heslington side of the Germany Beck development would at least be a tacit acknowledgement of the problem.
What makes this problem in Fulford all the more galling is that Derwenthorpe is planned with access roads in abundance, certainly more than one.
We all support the idea of not building more unnecessary roads but in Fulford it should be none, or at least more than one.
Alan and Fiona Smith,
Fordlands Road,
Fulford, York.
