I WISH like to clarify the situation regarding York's Race For Life following Mrs James' comments.
The event has grown in popularity to such an extent that we were forced to address the number of people taking part on safety grounds.
City of York Council is fully aware that Knavesmire can hold a much larger number of people than the safety limit for the race, but when we are dealing with people of all ages and abilities taking part in a "sporting" activity we have to take the advice of safety experts.
In carrying out a safety assessment, a figure of 5,000 was set.
The council has never said it would not support a second event. In fact we have previously suggested another event earlier in the day, which would accommodate groups who may find it difficult to take part on an evening.
The council's leisure office is supportive of the Race For Life and we hope to work with them on this event for many years to come.
Should anyone unable to get a place on the Race For Life wish to participate in charity walks/fun runs we have details of some which are planned over the summer in York and would be happy to pass on information.

Events officer,
City of York Council,
