YORK Cricket Club had mixed fortunes over the weekend when the weather decided their fate at Doncaster but victory was gained against Whitley Hall in the Cockspur National KO Cup yesterday.

The Yorkshire League champions seemed set for another win at Doncaster when they required 68 runs off 26 overs with seven wickets remaining.

Rain then intervened and Marcus Wood's side were left with only nine overs to make the runs - a task which proved too great.

York had a go and closed on 171-7, leaving each side to claim three points.

Doncaster had started in great style as Graham Attenborough and Andrew Rennison made a century stand in 22 overs.

Dan Broadbent and Rob Flack put in tight spells to start wickets falling and Mark Bell nipped in for three wickets with his leg-spin.

A robust 32 from Hassan Butt gave the home side a respectable, but less than anticipated, total of 194.

York lost Broadbent early on but Michael Sheedy and Simon Mason put on 90 before both fell to Peter Ellis. Nick Kay, and Duncan Snell seemed to be steering York to victory when the rain claimed supremacy.

York will face Doncaster again in a couple of weeks in the fourth round of the Cockspur Cup at Clifton Park after defeating Whitley Hall by four wickets yesterday.

The early Whitley Hall batsmen all got a start but then fell to the home bowling.

However, Jim Moorhouse and John Booth put on 77 in a threatening fifth wicket stand before Flack came on to remove both of them.

The Sheffield-based side's innings was downhill from there but their total of 170 was a target which could not be treated lightly.

York started solidly but lost wickets to tight bowling, including Kay and Mike Mortimer in successive deliveries from Nick Cawthorne.

Mason survived a no-ball dismissal to start the recovery path and he was soon followed by an assured knock from Snell that secured a home victory with ten overs to spare.

Doncaster set up their fourth round tie at York by beating last season's runners-up Ockbrook & Borrowash by seven wickets.
