MALTON and Norton Golf Club captain Chris Atkinson made a superb start to the year writes Roger Marshall.

The 13-handicapper teamed up with Tom Christie (nine) to record a score of 64 which, together with the 67 from club-mates E Fisher (seven) and M Dunning (13), secured the York Union of Golf Clubs' 1900 Anniversary Bowl at Fulford on count-back.

The same total was posted by the host club's David Rose (four) and Alan Heels (13) with 64, followed by a 67 from fellow Fulford players David Hodgson (six) and Nigel Lewis (six). But count-back determined the coveted prize went to the Welham Park club.

In another major 'home' setback, Fulford's Martin Pickles (six) and Eric Wainwright (13) also had a 64 but because they were reserves, additional to the allocated pairings, their score could not count.
