HEAVENS opened and Evans reigned in the York Rose Bowl event hosted by York Golf Club.

Rotherham GC's Matthew Evans was the only player in the top-notch field to break par in his two-round 139 total to cement a one-shot win over Northcliffe's Rob Hillas in the qualifier for the Yorkshire order of Merit - in which the second round was marred by a downpour.

Said York GC captain John Pearson: "We were delighted to once again hold the Rose Bowl.

"Matthew was a worthy winner."
