MARTIN Simpson, an English guitarist of great dexterity and versatility, has also been blessed with a lyrical voice well suited to singing emotionally-charged folk ballads.
In his latest album he explores the English folk treasure chest to create beautifully-judged interpretations of evergreen songs. He gives a breath-taking performance of that most atmospheric of ballads, The Flying Cloud, while he conjures up some banjo wizardry on The House Carpenter. Simpson is joined by Irish band Danu on When First I Came To Caledonia, Here's Adieu Sweet Lovely Nancy and Adieu Adieu. Gifted duo Nancy Kerr and James Fagin shine on The Cruel Brother, Love Henry and the atmospheric tune A Blacksmith Courted Me.
Simpson's self-composed tune Bareback To Bullhassocks is delightful, while Creeping Jane is an entertaining homage to a racehorse.
