I SHOULD like to clarify a few points raised by Mr Parkin's letter about air quality in Holgate Road, Blossom Street, Gillygate and Bootham (May 16).
The areas mentioned in the letter form part of the air quality management area (AQMA) declared by City of York Council in 2002.
Like 137 other local authorities, York has identified some areas of the city where average concentrations of nitrogen dioxide, a traffic pollutant, are currently greater than the target levels set by the Government.
The targets are aimed at protecting the health of people already suffering from lung diseases, such as asthma. Someone in good health would be unlikely to experience any serious health effects as a result of the general day-to-day pollution levels in York.
An air quality action plan (AQAP), setting out the measures for improving air quality in York, has been prepared and will be included in the new local transport plan.
Anyone wanting further information on air quality in York should visit the council's website at www.york.gov.uk/environment/
