IN his comments on the proposed green waste collections Julian Cole is concerned how the plans will affect him because he doesn't have a wheelie bin but does have a garden (May 12).

The answer is: his collections will be unchanged. As you have reported, the city council is proposing to introduce a green waste collection for 60,000 homes with gardens. By changing the way we collect waste we aim to see an increase in the amount recycled and a reduction in landfill.

This new service will run with the existing kerbside recycling collections - for glass bottles, jars, food and drink cans and paper - so recycling and composting will be collected one week and rubbish for landfill collected the other week.

If, like Julian Cole, you don't have a wheelie bin you won't receive the new green waste collections, although the kerbside recycling collections will continue to be provided to houses which now receive them.

New collections are to start after the summer. Residents will be provided, in advance, with information on how to take part and opportunities to attend road shows and learn more about why we need to make these changes.

Finally, as Mr Cole says he is "generally in favour of recycling" may we offer him a replacement box for kerbside recycling?

All he, or anyone else who needs one, has to do is ring the York Pride Action Line on (01904) 551551 or email recycling.team@york.gov.uk and we will deliver a replacement.
