THE London Olympics seemed a very distant prospect. Even if the bid were successful, these games would take place 200 miles and seven years away.
Now that has changed. Suddenly York is in the frame to host some of the 14,500 competitors because of its international standard athletics facilities and sports expertise.
This city has proved its ability to host major events, from papal blessings to European summits.
Soon after the inevitable triumph of Royal Ascot, York can begin preparations to become an Olympic village.
