YORK Crematorium will suspend funeral services for three hours a day during Royal Ascot, to ensure corteges are not stuck in raceday traffic jams.
City of York Council says it is planning a break in funeral services between noon and 3pm, when traffic on Bishopthorpe Road is likely to be at a peak.
A spokesman said visitors to the gardens and book of remembrance were also being advised to avoid these busy times."The external car park to the crematorium will have controlled entry throughout the day to prevent unauthorised use causing obstruction of the facility."
Dick Haswell, head of licensing and regulation, said the authority would work with funeral directors to plan funerals around peak traffic times.
"There will be no question of closure of the facility nor the need to use alternative crematoria, we are planning for minimum inconvenience to our users."
