YOUR front page picture and headline ('Let's hope it's not like this for Royal Ascot') on May 12 suggested the volume of traffic in the city centre during York's first race meeting of the season was unexpectedly high.
It wasn't. The traffic in your photograph was normal for a race day.
York Racecourse is one of the most popular in the country and contributes to the city's vibrant culture and economy.
With more than 30,000 visitors at major meetings, traffic levels will always be higher than on non-race days.
Of course visitor numbers for Royal Ascot at York will be much higher than at normal race meetings, which is why the council has been working on alternative traffic proposals for the last two years, with our partners across the region.
But the new proposals will not 'magic away' the additional traffic, they can only help to minimise the impact of the extra visitors.
Royal Ascot at York is a significant occasion in the city's history and I'm sure we all want it to be a success. I hope your future reports reflect this.
