THANK you for the Wolf's World cartoon about Elvington (May 9).
It contained a lot more of local residents' real feelings about the airfield than glowing articles about the bravery of daredevil stunt pilots or drivers of 140 mph Formula One cars.
The real point about the ever-increasing activities on this privately owned airfield - whether it is car racing, aerobatics, or motor cycle rallies - is not that activities are exciting, but that all are extremely noisy.
The people seeking thrills in their cars, motorbikes and planes are, at the same time, ruining the rights of other people - we the ordinary law-abiding residents in Elvington, Wheldrake, Heslington and Dunnington - to enjoy their homes and gardens in peace and quiet.
Last week, for example, we had four days of continuous noise - a Formula One car, two days of aerobatics, and an Auto 66 rally for 20 or 30 motorbikes.
And that was relatively quiet compared with the last week in April, when we had eight days of unremitting noise, including five days when a Le Mans car howled up and down the runway at full throttle, non-stop, from nine or ten in the morning until 5.30pm.
People working indoors three miles away on the university campus in Heslington rang the council to complain. All this comes after Elvington Park has been issued with a noise abatement order.
Their response?
To raise two fingers to everyone and increase the volume and frequency of the noise.
If something isn't done to stop them soon we shall have an outpost of Silverstone right here in the middle of our quiet country villages.
