YORK'S Martin Boyd and his Kid Boyd Band have become such firm favourites at the Keswick Jazz Festival that they are now booked to appear with high-calibre guest players.
This weekend Martin's band will be sharing the stage at Keswick's Alhambra Cinema with American trombonist Jim Fryer and ace Scottish trumpeter Bruce Adams. This will be a Sunday lunchtime gig. Details of the festival from 01768 774411.
Wakefield Jazz has an intriguing double bill tonight, with the bands of singer Rosie Brown and guitarist Jamie Taylor. The gig came about as a result of the big impression made at the club last year by Jami Sheriff's Octet.
CDs by Rosie (Miss Brown To You) and Jamie's band Java (Anywhere But Here) raised interest further since both feature pianist Sheriff. The earlier start of 8.30pm at the club will give a little more time to each band. Details from 01977 680542.
Jazz in the Spa is always keen to present young musicians, and Alan Beechey's Bright Stars of Jazz fit the bill tomorrow night, playing Chicago style. Jazz in the Spa is at the Trustees Hall, High Street, Boston Spa, details from 01937 842544.
The rival presentation tomorrow night will be the Sheena Davis Group at Howden Live. Sheena was formerly the lead singer with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra and has since won many awards and appears regularly at Ronnie Scott's Club. Howden Live is at the Shire Hall, Market Place, 01430 431535.
You will find Sunday night jazz in York at the Black Swan, Peasholme Green, for the weekly jam session. The second jam session is on Wednesday.
Trumpeter James Lancaster has passed on info about the Marquee Jazz Day at the Black Swan on Sunday, May 22. "Keyboards whiz George Hall has just written an entire CD of new music and he will be assembling the group to play the music live," said James. "He will also be playing with young vocalist Holly Taymar. We will also fit in the Ripon Grammar School Big Band and Paul Baxter's Band. Oh, and at some point saxophone player Tim New, lip in hand, will be celebrating a special birthday, which falls on that very Sunday."
Nina and Karl will be playing Fine and Mellow at the Rook and Gaskill, Lawrence Street, York, on Monday night and Jools Slater will be Jazzerhead at the Phoenix, George Street, York.
On Tuesday Scarborough Jazz at Scholars will present the Little Big Band. Led by Mike Smith, the tight professional sound of this 1940s-style six piece captivated the Scarborough audience on their last visit. Details from 01723 379818.
