Fans' favourite Simon Friend today returned to Australia for good after being KO'd as a York City Knight by an injury and career one-two.
Friend, who turned 28 on Friday, landed in Britain in March after being talked back to the Minster city and has scored twice in his five appearances.
But a nasty finger injury, coupled with a 'can't refuse' career opportunity for partner Katrina, has driven him away from York with a heavy heart.
He said: "It was a real hard decision but I guess it's just one of those things with the injury and everything as well as the career opportunities. You could say it's a bit of a sign.
"It's another chapter in our lives and we want to go down the career route. It's just a real big shame that it's happened at this time."
Friend broke the third finger of his right hand against Dewsbury on April 24 but it has failed to heal and there is a possibility he could lose the use of it - which would damage both his playing and cabinet-making careers - if it is not operated on.
The setback has come at the same time as an 'out of the blue' job offer for partner Katrina at a new private school. That was enough to tip the balance for the man who was always looking to settle down away from rugby at the end of the season.
He said: "I suppose you could say this is it for me and York, but I will definitely come back and visit, and hopefully in the not-too-distant future.
"Both me and Katrina will leave here with the happiest memories.
"I wish the club all the best and I will be keeping a close eye on them. I'm pretty sure that they will go on to win promotion this year. That's where they should be heading because it's one of the best-run clubs I have ever come across.
"The fans have been so great - I don't think I will ever come across any like that anywhere. They are the ultimate fan base that any club - and any player - could ever want.
"Their support has been awesome and I will miss them."
Knights head coach Mick Cook said: "It's a bit of a shock but it's Simon and Katrina's decision and we stand by them.
"We would like to thank Simon for his contribution. He's been a great bloke to work with and we wish him all the best. Hopefully he will get his finger sorted and will be able to play again 'Down Under'.
"I think the other players will miss him. He's well-liked and gives the squad plenty of enthusiasm.
"He's a real solid player. He gets about, he works hard and he very rarely makes a mistake - he's that kind of tough player.
"There's no ill-feeling at all - we fully understand the situation."
