HOLDERS St John's College taught fellow students College of Law a footballing lesson on their way to a 3-0 victory in the final of the York FA Sunday Afternoon Cup.

Matthew Craig, David Cornthwaite and Ryan Davies all netted while Law were reduced to ten men in the second half when their goalkeeper was sent off for swearing at referee John Whitehead.

David Norris and Davies both went close to opening the scoring early on, while Connor Maguire shot just over the crossbar for Law. But John's went in front on the hour with a low header from Craig.

With a strong wind and a hail-storm at their backs, John's doubled their lead when man-of-the-match Cornthwaite lobbed in from distance.

Law then lost their 'keeper for foul and abusive language even though he was awarded a free-kick and Davies completed the scoring despite offside appeals when he ran on to a through ball.

The Yorkshire Evening Press Cup was presented by York FA's Dip Patel.

In the final of the York FA Junior Minor Cup, Poppleton ran out 3-1 winners against Rawcliffe at Tadcaster Albion thanks to goals from George Chambers, Joe Dale and Sam Hope.

Rawcliffe's Tom Jackson had earlier broken from the halfway line only to be denied by a finger-tip save by Ashley Nelson before he opened the scoring with a 35-yard strike that bounced over the goalkeeper.

But Poppleton pressure saw them force three corners in quick succession just before the break and Chambers equalised in first half injury time with a soft shot that deceived Rawcliffe 'keeper Matthew Potter.

The second half saw Poppleton assume control and, on 52 minutes, Dale followed up to head in after Callum Andrew had hit the bar.

Adam Ferguson then saw a headed goal disallowed for pushing before Hope's low shot trickled through to seal victory.

York FA assistant secretary Barry Casterton made the presentations.
