SIX tries by York Acorn superstar Johnny Waldron made it a final day of the season to remember as the newly-promoted first team signed off with a 60-16 thrashing of Crosfields.

The young flier, who already has BARLA Great Britain under-21 caps to his name, finished off a great season by taking his personal tally to 40 league tries for the season - 43 including cups.

And that helped cap a wonderful day for the Blue and Golds as the Acorn 'A' team beat Undercliffe in the Pennine League division four title play-off to claim their championship just minutes before the first team took the field.

Winger Waldron struck with his first on 14 minutes to put his side in the lead for the first time, having gone down to a third-minute converted Cros-fields try before James Morrow and Andy Gargan combined to equalise.

Try number two came just before the end of the first half with the scores balanced at 12-12, before Waldron let rip in the second 40, starting just three minutes after the restart then adding in the 59th, 69th and 79th minutes to round off a double hat-trick.

But it wasn't a one-man effort. Full-back Danny Liddell crossed five minutes into the second half to make it 28-12 in Acorn's favour, Gargan again making the most of the extras as he kicked his second of five conversions and one penalty to stretch the lead further.

Stand-off Andy Lee, prop Adam Endersby and one of Waldron's key partners in crime - centre Mick Embleton - all nabbed one of their own.

Also on the scoresheet was Acorn legend Mick Colley making a record-breaking appearance as the first man to play for the Blue and Golds in four different decades.

Colley, who played to help raise money for stricken full-back Kev Brundrett, who has been missing from the squad and is still off work after a serious leg break against Stanningley in January, came off the bench to convert Waldron's fifth try.

New Earswick All Blacks hammered Queensbury 'A' 54-0 to make sure of the Pennine League division two title. A report of this, plus a round-up of amateur rugby league results and tables will be carried later in the week.
