YORK Cricket Club enjoyed a successful weekend with an Oxbridge Yorkshire ECB County Premier League victory at Rotherham followed by a return to Clifton Park yesterday to vanquish Beverley in the Cockspur National KO Competition.
What goes round comes round and, unlike last week, York received the benefit of the weather when their rivals had matches abandoned to rain.
York inserted Rotherham and soon broke their back as their bowlers weighed in for five wickets in 20 overs, conceding only 28 runs.
Medium-pacer Greg How had two victims in three overs before limping off with a leg strain.
Yorkshire bowler Jon Blain made a defiant 44 for the South Yorkshire men before speedster Nick Thornicroft returned to mop up the tail along with off-spinner Dan Broadbent.
York's reply to Rotherham's 149 was dismissive with Michael Sheedy and Broadbent clearing the deficit in only 27 overs without loss to take York back to the head of the Yorkshire ECB Premier League by three points from Harrogate.
Beverley elected to bat in yesterday's Cockspur collision but soon found seamer Rob Flack in top form and he claimed four wickets in his opening nine overs.
Jamie Mitchell and Rob Todd began a recovery but rain intervened to cut their 45 overs to 41. Then a further heavy burst left them stranded at 32 overs as the time-related overs reduction mechanism kicked in to deprive them of the chance for a final assault to enhance their total.
York soon found themselves three wickets down but Simon Mason rallied his colleagues with a disciplined knock of 73 that included 12 fours. Duncan Snell helped him earn a six-wicket victory with nine overs to spare.
The only disappointment of the weekend was the news that Easingwold had lost to Whitley Hall from Sheffield so nullifying the juicy prospect of a third round tie at Clifton Park against the York and District Senior League outfit in two weeks' time.
