YORK Under-11s schoolboys held their nerve against previously undefeated Sheffield to win the Yorkshire League for the first time in 25 years and pocket part one of a possible trophy quadruple.
The league campaign came to a tense conclusion at York Sixth Form College as the top two teams battled it out in an all-or-nothing double-header with the winner taking both the league title and the last place in the league cup final against Hull.
Heavy rain delayed the kick-off but York were on the ball soon after the start as Jamie Wilstrop slid the ball past the Sheffield 'keeper.
But the strong Sheffield side regained their shape and unlocked the York defence with neat football to take their equaliser.
An all-out battle for a winner ensued with Aaron Hudson and Connor Qualter superb in the York defence to keep Sheffield out.
The deadlock remained unbroken through extra time and into penalties where goalkeeper George Catling proved the hero as he saved two great penalties and Qualter, Tom Kirke, Jacob McCormick and Alex Needham all scored theirs to win 4-2 without Jacob Gore having to step up.
The win leaves the u11s with three cup finals to challenge for to top a mercurial season.
