Biker scheme to step up a gear

A SCHEME to reduce the number of bikers killed in North Yorkshire is to be rolled out across the rest of the region and the North East.

Operation Halter, a joint initiative between North Yorkshire Police and North Yorkshire County Council, is to be extended after the number of fatalities in the county fell by more than a third last year.

Police forces in West and South Yorkshire, Humberside, Cleveland and Durham have now agreed to support the operation.

Last year, the number of motorcycle deaths on North Yorkshire's roads was reduced from 28 to 17.

Throughout the summer months, officers from all participating forces will now hold simultaneous "Days of Action" to target dangerous riders.

High-profile patrols, cross-border schemes and enforcement will all aim to crack down on bikers who break the law.
