I AM writing in response to Jenny Cammidge's comments about Royal Ascot (April 19).

Why is every enhancement to our streets, from Coney Street to Copmanthorpe, being attributed to Royal Ascot when, in reality, it is the York Pride programme which is behind the visible improvements?

This work is answering calls from York residents and would have taken place with or without this particular event.

Royal Ascot will provide a huge boost to the economic development of our city and the region, and this is why Yorkshire Forward gave £650,000 towards the costs of hosting the festival.

This is a chance to showcase York to 60,000 people a day visiting the event, and about ten million TV viewers in 33 countries.

York residents benefit from better facilities, shops and restaurants than a location of 180,000 people alone could support thanks to the number of visitors.

As for the claim that Joe Public can't afford to go, don't forget that if you live within a two mile radius you can buy tickets for £4. Telephone 01344 876876 and quote your postcode to see if you are eligible.

I hope residents support the festival, and that it will be a great success for York.

Coun Martin Lancelott,

Hazel Garth,

York.
